The man in profile, at the far left, is my Uncle Jan. I mention him in the essay "Silence." I was a kid; he had lived through world wars and invasions. We did not speak each other's languages. I spent three weeks with him one summer gathering nettles to feed his pig, hunting mushrooms, eating when hungry and appreciating every bite, and tending his bees. It was the best three weeks of my life. |
