Patriotism, the Left, and 9-11
This is Danusha Goska.
When Matthew Shepard was martyred, though I'm not gay, I and other progressives reached out to
the gay community and stood in solidarity with them. When Korean student Won-Joon Yoon was shot
by a white supremacist, I prayed at his Korean church and attended his funeral.
When Iraq and Serbia were bombed, I worked with Iraqi and Serbian peace activists.
On September 11, 2001, thousands of Americans were burned alive for no other crime than their
nationality; the rest of Americans were humiliated, violated, and terrorized.
In their response to this tragedy, many American leftists have not heeded the progressive call
to stand with victims of hate, but, rather, have attempted to justify, to rationalize, hate --
maybe American victims deserve to suffer because of this or that sin committed by their government.
Rather than express sympathy for and solidarity with victims of one of the worst single hate crimes
in history, too many leftists have tried to exploit a wave of publicity to advance this or that
conspiracy theory, to score politically correct points in some propaganda war, and to nit pick
at America's wounded body.
These same leftists did not hesitate to express compassion for gay or Iraqi victims.
I am a leftist, and a political progressive. No differently than in the past, I stand, foursquare,
with the innocent victims of always irrational, and always unjustifiable, hate. I am wearing red,
white, and blue today, and flying an American flag.
For Speak Your Mind, this has been Danusha Goska.
