Gay Marriage

"Gay marriage? No way!. God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve," so some say.
Suppose we did follow Biblical models. Adam and Eve, the first heterosexual couple, had two sons.
One murdered the other. Then there's Noah, whose daughters had sex with him, Abraham, who violated
his slave girl and then sent her and their child, Ishmael, into the desert to die. Jepthah performed
a human sacrifice of his own daughter. Lott offered his daughters to strangers to be raped. Tamar
disguised herself as a hooker and had a child by her father-in-law. Jacob married ugly Leah only
to get beautiful Rachel; the jealousy this engendered caused their sons to attempt to murder their
brother, Joseph. David murdered Uriah to get to Bathsheba, whom he first encountered when he was
peeping on her as she took a bath. Given heterosexual family models, it's no wonder that the apostle
Paul was a confirmed bachelor who declared that "it is good for man not to touch woman."
On the other hand, the Bible is full of truly loving relationships between people of the same
gender: David and Jonathan, Ruth and Naomi, Paul and Timothy.
The idea that a family has always meant "one man, one woman, and happily ever after"
is a lie. Statistics, history, and our own Bible say so. For example, recent research in Africa
shows that in high-risk environments, the guarantee of a child's survival is involvement
not by a father, but by a maternal grandmother.
"What does the Lord require of us?" asks the book of Micah. "Do justice, love kindness
and walk humbly with your God." Gay couples can do that as well as straight ones, certainly
better than most biblical models.
